Privacy Policy
Last updated: 5 July 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how The Mental Half ("we", "us", "our") collects, uses, and protects your information when you use The Mental Half mobile application (the "App") and this website. We comply with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). We take privacy seriously, especially because many of our users are young athletes and the App handles information about mental wellbeing.
1. Who we are
The Mental Half is an Australian-based mental wellbeing app for junior athletes. If you have any questions about this policy or your data, contact us at contact@a2zbasketball.com.au.
2. Information we collect
We collect only what we need to make the App work:
- Account information, such as your name or nickname, email address, age or date of birth, and password, if you create an account.
- Wellbeing content you choose to enter, such as mood check-ins, journal entries, habit and routine data, and reflections. This may include information about your mental wellbeing.
- Usage and device data, meaning basic technical information such as device type, operating system version, app version, and anonymised usage statistics (e.g. which features are used), used to fix bugs and improve the App.
We do not collect your precise location, contacts, or photos, and we do not use your data for advertising.
3. How we use your information
- To provide the App's features, including check-ins, journaling, routines, and insights.
- To maintain and secure your account.
- To fix bugs, improve performance, and develop new features.
- To respond to support requests.
- To meet legal obligations.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share your wellbeing content with coaches, clubs, schools, advertisers, or anyone else without your explicit consent.
4. Children and young people
The Mental Half is designed for junior athletes, and we hold ourselves to a higher standard because of it:
- For users under 15, we require the consent of a parent or guardian before an account can be created, consistent with Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) guidance. Where users are located overseas, we also comply with local requirements (such as COPPA in the United States and the age of digital consent in the EU/UK).
- We collect the minimum data necessary and never use children's data for marketing, advertising, or profiling.
- Parents and guardians may contact us at any time to review, correct, or delete their child's data by emailing contact@a2zbasketball.com.au.
- If we learn we have collected personal data from a child without required consent, we will delete it promptly.
5. Sensitive wellbeing data
Journal entries, mood check-ins, and similar content can reveal information about your mental health. This is "sensitive information" under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), which we handle with a higher level of protection. This content is stored securely, is visible only to you within the App, and is never used for advertising or shared with third parties for their own purposes. Where the App offers optional sharing features (for example, sharing a summary with a parent or coach), sharing happens only when you actively choose it.
6. How your data is stored and protected
Your data is stored using industry-standard security measures, including encryption in transit and at rest. Access to personal data is restricted to what is strictly necessary to operate the service. No system is 100% secure, but we work to protect your information and will notify you and the OAIC of any eligible data breach in accordance with the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
7. Third-party services
The App may rely on a small number of trusted service providers (for example, cloud hosting and anonymised crash reporting) to function. These providers process data only on our instructions and are not permitted to use it for their own purposes. The App does not contain third-party advertising or tracking SDKs.
8. Data retention and deletion
We keep your data only for as long as you have an account. You can delete individual entries at any time within the App, and you can delete your entire account and all associated data from the App's settings or by emailing contact@a2zbasketball.com.au. Deletion requests are processed within 30 days.
9. Your rights
Under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles, you have the right to:
- Access a copy of your personal information.
- Correct inaccurate, out-of-date, or incomplete information.
- Delete your data by closing your account.
- Export your data in a portable format.
- Withdraw consent at any time.
- Complain to us, and if you're not satisfied with our response, to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au.
If you're located overseas, you may have additional rights under laws such as the GDPR or UK GDPR, and we will honour those too. To exercise any of these rights, email contact@a2zbasketball.com.au.
10. Automated insights
The App's "Insights" feature uses your check-in and habit data to automatically generate personal trends and summaries. These insights are for your own reflection only. We do not use automated processing to make decisions that significantly affect your rights or interests, and no automated decisions are shared with coaches, clubs, or anyone else.
11. Overseas disclosure
Your data is stored with reputable cloud providers and may be hosted outside Australia. Where that happens, we take reasonable steps in accordance with APP 8 to ensure your information receives protection consistent with the Australian Privacy Principles.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will post the updated version on this page and, for material changes, notify you in the App. The "Last updated" date above shows the current version.
